TOWARDS A RESEARCH AGENDA FOR ENERGY-EFFICIENT COMMUNICATIONS The Green Communications Workshop is a timely event that will sort out substance from hype in the increasingly important topic of energy efficiency in communications and networking. This fact-finding and research agenda-building workshop will explore the opportunities and challenges associated with drastic energy savings in communications, whether on the Internet and in data centers, in the wireless domain--- or anywhere else. The workshop will involve selected invited “vision” presentations and panel discussions as well as break-out brainstorming sessions on: • Reducing the carbon emissions footprint of communications • Increasing the energy efficiency of the communication process The ultimate goal is to transform the deliberations of the workshop into a coherent research agenda that will be presented to research funding agencies. Representatives of these agencies are also invited to participate in the workshop. Since the focus of the workshop is on the fundamental level we expect an emphasis on longer term issues and objectives. The workshop is sponsored by the Institute for Systems Research, the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, and the A. James Clark School of Engineering at the University of Maryland, with additional strong interest by funding agencies. Listen to experts, debate the issues, generate a report for a research agenda in the field that is currently experiencing an explosive growth! This workshop is open to all interested researchers in either the hardware or the system design and protocols of communication systems and networks for a nominal registration fee. We sincerely hope you will join us at the Green Communications Workshop. Organizing Committee
